Flamenco originated in the Andalusian region of Spain, combining elements of music, dance and song that were influenced by Roma, Moorish and Spanish people. In the 20th century, it experienced a global resurgence with artists in the likes of Camarón de la Isla, Pastora Pavón and La Paquera de Jerez touring some of the greatest stages of the world. This season, the passionate art form can be experienced in Music City firsthand, thanks to the fiery “We Call It Flamenco” show, coming soon to Nashville.
Blending world-class dancers with the rhythmic strokes of the Spanish guitar and the soulful cante, the show will take you on a journey through the history of flamenco. Places are limited so mark your calendars for September 13 for you won’t want to miss it out.
What is “We Call It Flamenco”?
“We Call It Flamenco” is a 60-minute Authentic flamenco show. Throughout four acts, it honors the Andalusian cultural identity, bringing iconic dances and palos to the stage. What’s more, all the essential elements of the typical tablao are set to make an appearance, including the Spanish guitar, las palmas (rhythmic hand clapping) and the flamenca dresses and shawls.
Flamenco, its palos and the show
Within the flamenco world, there are about 50 different palos or cantes, meaning traditional musical forms and varieties depending on the rhythmic patterns, motifs and the theme that the songs want to convey. For instance, fandangos de Huelva have five verses and are considered the mother of the flamenco style, whereas cantiñas de Cádiz have four verses and are more festive in nature.
In “We Call It Flamenco”, six of these palos will be brought to the stage, where two flamenco dancers will dazzle audiences with fluid and graceful arm movements and tap their heels, toes and balls of their feet to create percussive rhythms. Alongside a talented guitarist and vocalist, these artists express the ups and downs of the human experience.
Following widespread success in more than 20 cities across the world, “We Call It Flamenco” is coming to Nashville to ignite the stage with intense dances and soulful music.
Tickets are sold in tiers depending on the proximity to the stage. You can choose between two shows that start at 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm and doors open 30 minutes before the start of each performance.
